Berneslai and Barnardo’s spread the word to support young carers in Barnsley

A Barnsley housing provider has been working with children’s charity Barnardo’s to highlight the support needs of young carers.

Young carers are children or a young person under 18 who care for a family member who has a physical illness or disability, mental health difficulties, sensory or learning disability, or has drugs or alcohol problems.

Members of the Barnsley Young Carers’ Council recently delivered a presentation at Holy Trinity School in Barnsley, sharing some of their own experiences of caring (pictured).

Following the presentation they distributed their information card to every pupil. The card contains useful links to a wide variety of information and support from both Barnardo’s and Berneslai Homes, and also aims to encourage young people to identify themselves as young carers.

“There are a lot of Young Carers in Barnsley, many are unknown to the service and are unaware of the support available,” said Kate Hensby from Barnardo’s. “Working with Berneslai Homes to develop the card has given us the opportunity to further raise awareness and potentially reach those Young Carers, providing them with the opportunity to access support and advice.”

Dave Fullen, director of customer and estate services at Berneslai Homes, added: “Where we know a young carer lives in one of our properties we will be able to tailor our services to meet their needs. This will hopefully take a little bit of pressure off; making things easier for the young carer.”
