Bernicia offers £10k backing for Newcastle United Foundation’s Premier League Kicks project

A housing provider in the North East has backed a community football project with a donation of £10,000 to secure it future.

The Premier League (PL) Kicks project, in Berwick, Northumberland, run by the Newcastle United Foundation (NUF), aims to use the power of sport to improve the lives of young children in hard to reach areas; allowing them to develop their social skills through football.

The initiative allows the foundation to deliver free football sessions at 12 different venues across Newcastle, North Tyneside, Gateshead and Northumberland.

Bernicia Homes has committed a further £10,000 to the project for another year. This matches the funding it provided last year.

The money will go towards equipment, cost of venue hire, and staff costs allowing NUF to provide free football for young children in the area and community projects.

Nearly 120 children are currently signed up in Berwick with 40 young players attending each week.

Rachel Bickerdike, Business Development Manager at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “We are very grateful for the generosity of Bernicia as they continue to support the PL Kicks programme for another year,” said Rachel Bickerdike, NUF’s business development manager. The funding they provide will be vital in allowing us to continue our work in the Berwick community.”

Jeannie McMillan, Bernicia’s director of housing services, added: “The Berwick Kicks project is hugely successful in bringing the local community together through the passion people have for Newcastle United.

“The aim of the project to improve young people’s lives through the power of sport, reflects the objective we have at Bernicia of investing in neighbourhoods and communities through our new corporate strategy ‘Housing People, Helping People.’

“We look forward to seeing the Berwick project with the Newcastle United Foundation continue to go from strength to strength.”
