Durham regeneration partnership hits 2,000 “affordable” homes milestone

A regeneration partnership set up to revive the fortunes of communities in the Durham coalfields has just hit the milestone of its 2,000th home to secure planning permission.

The property will be at Gibside, Chester-le-Street, where the Durham Villages Regeneration Company (DVRC) will build 78 two-, three- and four-bedroomed homes.

When completed – in 2020 – the development will have taken DVRC’s tally of schemes it has delivered to 32. In total, these consist of 2,059 homes, of which 448 are for “affordable” rent.

DVRC is a partnership between Durham County Council and Keepmoat Homes and was established in 2001. The homes it has built for sale fetch an average price of around £105,000, it says; claiming that it is putting the housing ladder within reach of local people.

Over 80% of the homes sold are have bene bought by people living within 10 miles of the development, with around 60% being first time buyers, DVRC claims.

“It is extremely pleasing to see the partnership reaching such an impressive milestone and especially creating so many homes which are within the reach of those living in our small towns and villages, whether renters or buyers,” said Councillor Carl Marshall, chair of DVRC.

“With developments at Dipton, Peterlee, Seaham and Sherburn Hill already underway, Chester-le-Street will be the fifth live DVRC project and I welcome the benefits the development will bring for Chester le Street.”
