Great Places to invest £14.5m in Blackburn to deliver almost 100 new homes

A derelict former nursing home in Blackburn is to make way for 16 new homes built using modular construction methods.

Great Places Housing Group is investing £3 million to deliver the homes on Shorrock Lane (main image). It expects the homes will be completed by the end of the year. They are to be let for “affordable” rent.

The new homes will replace the former nursing home. This had become a target for vandals and arsonists over the past decade, the housing provider explained. As such, it was a source of some concern for local residents and the emergency services alike.

Shorrock Lane is part of a wider programme that will see Great Places invest an overall sum of £14.5 million to deliver almost 100 new homes in the town. Further homes will be developed on sites at Bowen Street in the Mill Hill area, and Shakespeare Way in Griffin.

The scheme at Bowen Street will see 24 homes delivered, with an investment of £3.3 million; they will also be let at “affordable” rents and complete in Spring 2021.

Great Places is also committed to deliver 56 new homes at Shakespeare Way, an investment of £8.1 million. The new homes will be a mix of “affordable” rent and shared ownership, which will be sold by Plumlife.

The wider site will see new homes delivered for market sale and private rent alongside the “affordable” housing. These homes at Shakespeare Way will also be completed by mid-2021.

Helen Spencer, Great Places’ director of development, said: “We have worked closely with Blackburn with Darwen Council to bring these housing options to neighbourhoods where we have existing homes and see a real need for more quality, affordable housing.

“Great Places has committed to do all it can do tackle the housing crisis and we are exploring various routes to bring affordable solutions to the market and deliver new homes in our communities.”
