A local authority and its housing management company have celebrated the completion of 12 new council homes in Barnsley.

Councillors and senior figures from Berneslai Homes joined the new residents to mark the occasion last week during a celebration at Keresforth Close, Kingstone, in Barnsley.

The event was attended by new tenants, the mayor, Councillor Pauline Markham, along with the council’s cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, Councillor Tim Cheetham, and staff from Barnsley Council and Berneslai Homes.

To mark the occasion a tree was planted, which will grow and develop with the scheme.

“These homes have been very popular with applicants and we’ve let all properties to people from the council waiting list, prior to completion of the works,” said Helen Jaggar, Berneslai Homes’ chief executive.

“They are in a great location within easy walking distance of local primary/ secondary schools and 15 minutes from Barnsley town centre. I wish all the families many happy years living and enjoying their homes.”

Councillor Cheetham added: “The delivery of good quality social rented housing for people who need it is a key function of the council and these homes are a wonderful addition to the council’s housing stock, in an area where demand is high. Keresforth Close is a great example of a scheme that delivers on several fronts, bringing back into use redundant buildings and providing new high quality homes at social rent levels.”

Berneslai Homes started the work in partnership with Barnsley Council in February to convert and refurbish the former NHS staff accommodation and offices. Local contractor O&P Construction carried out the work to 11 three-bed and one four-bed home, which has been adapted for a family with an identified need.
