A social landlord in Liverpool has embarked on a project to restore three Grade II-listed cottages that date back to the 18th century.
South Liverpool Homes (SLH) has appointed Avela Developments to deliver the project to renovate its Hale Road Cottages in Speke (pictured). The project consists of renovating the properties and sympathetically extend them to comply with national space standards.
“Hale Road Cottages is an historic focal point in Speke, and the community are keen to see work begin to bring the cottages back to their former glory,” said Claire Ryan, SLH’s director of investment and assurance.
“We’re excited to break ground on this project and, with a strong local partnership with Avela Developments, deliver a scheme that respects our local history while providing spacious, modern homes for generations to come.”
Avela Developments, a joint venture between Avela Services and local firm Penny Lane Builders, will also deliver 17 two-bedroom level-access bungalows on the land surrounding the cottages, providing new, much-needed accessible homes for people over 55.
The plans, which were approved in January 2020, also include a communal hub and gardens, to help reduce feelings of isolation and create a new, inclusive community centred on one of Speke’s historic and well-loved landmarks.
Gerard McEvoy, head of Avela Developments, said: “It’s exciting to see work start on site at Hale Road Cottages. We’re based in South Liverpool so it’s satisfying to know that our skilled local tradespeople will be playing their part in delivering this iconic local project that means so much to the people of Speke.”
