Karbon Homes has welcomed the first residents to its development of new, affordable bungalows in Sacriston, with one particular customer describing the move as ‘life changing’.
George Bell, 74, moved into his new home in May, and as a wheelchair user he’s praised the housing association for providing much-needed accessible housing in the area.
“The bungalow is marvellous, I’m over the moon with the place. I’d been waiting for a while for somewhere suitable to come available for me through the choice based lettings system, and when Karbon offered me this bungalow I snapped it up.”George Bell
George has severe arthritis leaving him dependent on using either a wheelchair or arthritic crutches to get around. Living by himself, the bungalow has allowed him to maintain his independence.
“Moving in has been quite life changing. I feel really confident living here by myself as I can access every room in the house with no issue and this boost in confidence has helped me become more independent in other aspects of my life.
“Karbon has really looked after me and I’m grateful for this beautiful home they’ve given me.”George Bell
George’s bungalow is one of 19 on the site, all of which have two-bedrooms and are available for affordable rent.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the demand for these new bungalows and it’s great to hear first-hand the difference they’re making to the lives of those who have moved in.
“Stories like George’s reinforces how important it is for us to continue investing in building modern, energy-efficient and easily adaptable homes that help customers live safely and independently for longer.”Zoey Hawthorne, Assistant Director of Development Delivery at Karbon Homes
The development received £660.5k in funding from Homes England to bring it to fruition.
“Despite the current challenges affecting the country, accelerating housebuilding remains our number one priority.
“We are committed to supporting Karbon Homes who have ambitions to build new homes and our investment through affordable housing grant allows us to do that. We’re delighted that this funding has enabled Karbon Homes to deliver much needed new homes in Sacriston.”Kirsty Birbeck, Provider Management Manager at Homes England
This bungalow development is part of a £8.5m investment by Karbon to develop more new homes in Sacriston.
Less than a mile away, construction is well underway on 25 new affordable family homes, located at the junction of Durham Road and Plawsworth Road in Sacriston.
