A Salford cheerleading troupe will be ‘bringing it on’ in style thanks to a cash boost from a local housing association.

The Firestorm cheerleaders, which train in Swinton and Clifton, have been awarded £250 from Salix Homes’ Springboard community grant programme.

The cheerleaders look set to dazzle in their upcoming competitions after using the funding to purchase a batch of shiny new pompoms.

Firestorm holds weekly training sessions, giving young people an opportunity to keep fit and make new friends, as well as compete in competitions at national and even international levels.

“Cheerleading is a fantastic sport for young people to get involved in as it improves confidence, fitness and posture,” said group organiser, Sarah Aldcroft.

“Our group currently boasts more than 100 dancers and we’re focusing on competing in around four competitions each season. The last event we attended took place at the Blackpool Winter Gardens and our cheerleaders had a great time showing off their skills and getting to know other teams from across the UK.”

Helen Byrne, neighbourhood manager for Salix Homes, added: “We’re proud to be able to support a group like Firestorm, which provides a valuable space for local kids to make friends and keep active.

“We’re certain that the team will dazzle audiences at upcoming competitions, and we’ll be backing them all the way.”
