The regeneration group Torus is set to invest £16.1 million into transforming the former site of The King’s School in Macclesfield into new homes.

Torus’ plans will see the Grade II listed Fence House redeveloped into 27 refurbished apartments and 60 affordable homes, offering people a mix of social and affordable rent and shared ownership tenures.

Over 200 more properties will be built on the site, which will form part of a larger development, to create a new community close to Macclesfield town centre.

Kate Ellison, director of housing growth & strategy at Torus, said: “At Torus, we are dedicated to preserving local landmarks and working with original features to give building’s new leases of life while tailoring them to the current needs of communities.

“We understand the importance of this site and will invest heavily into the redevelopment of Fence House – and ultimately the wider Macclesfield economy – to create homes people can be proud of for many years to come.

“Redeveloping places is central to our organisational ethos and this project will work to celebrate Fence House’s history, all the while looking ahead to the future.”

The Macclesfield project is just one of several heritage projects Torus has undertaken, including the award-winning development of Ogden’s tobacco factory in Everton, Liverpool which has a Grade II listed clock tower.

Torus is currently redeveloping the iconic Liverpool landmark Allerton Fire and Police Station – which featured in the Beatles song ‘Penny Lane’ – to create 40 new affordable apartments for over-55s.

Elsewhere in Liverpool, the group is also in consultation with residents as it looks to build on the site of Liverpool Football Club’s old Melwood training facility.

Torus says it aims to work with the local community to preserve the heritage of the site and create a legacy beyond football.
